From cramped cages to roaming freely at LIONSROCK
The mighty Dolf enjoys his space a lot and loves observing everything around him – sometimes from a hidden spot as if waiting for a historic attack of the day!
When he's feeling playful and cutesy, he goes all in – quite literally stuffing his head into a scent-filled box before rolling around in pure bliss. Horse poop, game dung, grass, spice? That is his idea of luxury. He also loves rubbing against enrichment, growling to express himself, and giving his caretakers slow and sleepy blinks of approval.
Dolf’s life had a tough start
The journey of Dolf; from sadness to special care in FELIDA Big Cat Sanctuary in the Netherlands, to his spacious forever home in LIONSROCK, began in September 2021 when FOUR PAWS embarked on one of their extraordinary rescue missions in Romania.
Nine lions, including Dolf and his four siblings, were kept in desperately poor conditions in the village of Picior de Munte in Romania. Dolf was kept as a pet in a small backyard and caged in a tiny and unsafe enclosure with barely any space to move around. Abused for commercial profit and human amusement, he was deprived of the opportunity to develop and fulfil the full range of his natural needs and interests.
Born on the 1st of July 2019, Dolf was subjected to continuous misery, stress and fear until, at two years old when, he was eventually handed over to FOUR PAWS after a rescue mission that marked the culmination of protracted negotiations with the private keeper. Dolf, along with his four siblings, arrived at LIONSROCK on 10 August 2022, a day we celebrate as World Lion Day.
But now, his days are stress-free
Today, Dolf and his siblings, Roman, Vincent, Ellie, and Geena can be seen roaming around, having fun and enjoying the amenities in their spacious species-appropriate enclosure.
Dolf is the most sensitive of the siblings and very shy. Although he is also the smallest, he has a good bond with his brothers, Roman and Vincent and they don’t display any dominant behaviour towards him. Dolf keeps out of the rough play his brothers enjoy, but his inner kitten comes out when it’s time for enrichment!
