    Life as an exhibition

At just two years old, Shevar and his brother, Sharukh, arrived at South Africa’s Bloemfontein Zoo. Confined to a small enclosure with no room to roam, Shevar’s world was one of bars and endless staring eyes.

The zoo temporarily closed down in 2019 but failed to continue caring for the animals. When it was discovered that five animals had died of starvation, an emergency intervention for the over 150 animals still living at the zoo was arranged.

    Shevar's new life

But Shevar’s story did not end there. Now living at LIONSROCK Big Cat Sanctuary, he and his brother, Sharukh, finally have space to roam and are free from the noise and stress of life as an exhibition. Shevar is very playful and energetically engages with his enrichment. He can also be seen enjoying the view from high up on his platforms or cooling off in his pool.

    A new chapter

Shevar, together with his brother, Sharukh, have adapted well at LIONSROCK and settled in comfortably amongst other rescued tigers as their neighbours.

The two brothers can now be seen napping and rolling together in the sun, grooming, playing chase, and playing with their favourite toy – a boomer ball (an oversized, tough, rubber sphere).

Shevar is waiting to be adopted

Your adoption will help fund his care and support his species-appropriate life at LIONSROCK Big Cat Sanctuary. But it will do even more than that: your support makes sure that we can continue to help more lions like Dolf and create a world where people treat animals with empathy, respect and understanding.

As Shevar’s sponsor, you’ll receive exclusive updates, photos, and videos from his caretakers, along with a personalised adoption certificate and a special gift bag featuring Shevar. You can even choose to receive a Shevar plush toy—a beautiful reminder that you are part of Shevar’s incredible journey.
