Life as an exhibition
At just two years old, Shevar and his brother, Sharukh, arrived at South Africa’s Bloemfontein Zoo, where they were confined to a small enclosure, with no room to roam. Shevar’s world was one of bars and endless staring eyes. The zoo temporarily closed down in 2019 but failed to continue caring for the animals. When it was discovered that five animals had died of starvation, an emergency rescue for the over 150 animals still living at the zoo was immediately set in motion.
Shevar's new life
But Shevar’s story did not end in struggle. Now living at LIONSROCK Big Cat Sanctuary, he and his brother, Sharukh, finally have space to roam and are free from the noise and stress of life as an exhibition. Shevar is very playful and energetically engages with his enrichment. He can also be seen enjoying the view from high up on his platforms or cooling off in his pool.
